The IRF2 uses a small curved wall of punched aluminum with 3 layers of polyester fiberboard separated with air gaps. These layers combine to help reduce room or stage ambience and isolate the mic from unwanted external noise.
Not just for the studio, the IRF2 is used live on stage by artists ranging from Tom Petty to Paramore (on guitars) to Steve Winwood (on a saxophone) to My Morning Jacket (on a Fender Rhodes through a guitar amp).
